Vocabulary TEK:

Reading/vocabulary development: The student acquires an extensive vocabulary through reading and systematic word study.

Activities:

Vocabulary Podcast: A vocabulary podcast accessed through the iPODs can be used to reinforce (through listening and speaking) vocabulary already learned in class or to introduce new vocabulary. The students can be taught to learn a certain numbers of vocabulary words outside of class with the iPODs and turn in a verbal file of their use of the words.

See the examples, in the playlist to the right, of files for students to use on the iPODs.

Classroom Vocabulary uses pictures along with the audio so that a beginning learner could learn these words on their own and then record their use of the words for an assessment.

This example is classroom vocabulary from Oxford Picture Dictionary. This would be assigned as an outside vocabulary assignment that a student could master without any pre-teaching.

Tom Sawyer Vocabulary are only using audio which would make this better for reinforcing vocabulary already learned in class.

For this activity the teacher would introduce the chapter and build background. Then before or during teaching the chapter they would assign the audio file of the chapter for the student to take home and listen to while following along with the book. The student after practicing would record themselves reading the whole chapter or parts and then also record themselves using the vocabulary in a sentences. This would be a file for the student to use as self critic of reading fluency but also turn into to their teacher. The teacher would use this as part of assessment of reading fluency.

To extend the use of audio, the teacher could also use read and respond questions or comprehension questions for the students to respond to orally (see playlist selections to right).

Any oral reflections on readings could be kept by the teacher to create a verbal portfolio.
